1 out of 10 Children with Cancer Will Die from an Infection

Their compromised immune systems, as a result of their cancer treatment, leave their bodies unable to fight off infections. The survivors are left maimed and mutilated by the ravages of these infections.

Save Our Sick Kids Foundation, Inc. (SOS Kids) was founded to raise awareness and improve the treatment of infections affecting children with weakened immune systems from cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Through generous charitable donations, SOS Kids provides funding for education and outreach efforts to save the lives and limbs of these children. SOS Kids makes an immediate difference in these children’s lives.

SOS Kids Saves Lives Today

A major objective of the SOS Kids Foundation is to establish the Center for Treatment of Immunocompromised Children (CTIC) to save the lives of children with life-threatening infections through expert physician outreach efforts and protocol-driven advanced treatment methods developed through laboratory and clinical research.

CTIC - The Center for Treatment of Immunocompromised Children

Background:
Children who have compromised immune systems are at increased risk for developing serious and life-threatening bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Such children include those whose immune systems are compromised by cancer or its treatment, transplantation, prematurity of birth, primary immunodeficiencies, burns and trauma. There are many children who develop life-threatening bacterial, fungal and viral infections that do not respond to standard treatment regimens. These infections are an important cause of suffering and death in these children. For the past quarter century, Dr. Thomas Walsh of the Weill Cornell Medical College and members of his Program have developed many of the strategies used to successfully prevent and treat these infections. As the demands for such care
increase, the time has come to formalize this outreach into the CTIC. The CTIC will provide leading-edge laboratory and clinical research to save the lives of children with serious infections not responding to standard treatments.

Goals:
  • To establish a national and international network of expert medical centers for treatment of serious infections in children with impaired immune systems
  • To respond to emergency calls from the physicians and families of the nation’s children who are suffering from serious infections and respond to these calls with expert guidance, protocol-guided care and, where indicated, transfer of the child to a center or deployment of a member of the network to the patient’s bedside.
  • To implement life-saving novel treatment regimens consisting new agents, combination therapies, adaptive pharmacotherapy, augmentation of host defenses, and adjunctive supportive care through a national and international network of centers of excellence who can care for seriously ill children with life-threatening infections.
  • To discover and develop new strategies from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside for treatment of life-threatening infections in children with impaired immune systems
  • To train a new generation of clinician-scientists to develop and apply new treatments of life-threatening infections in children with impaired immune systems
